Where is my spa cover? Ever have to ask yourself this question after a wind storm? I have had people tell me they have found their cover a quarter mile from their home. I do not know how they knew it was their cover. Maybe in some parts of the country people write things on their spa covers to help them recover them after a storm. Personally I think it might be time for a different type of spa cover. I found a posting on a spa cover dealers website claiming that they had several covers that made it through Hurricane Katrina. The question to ask is are they selling anything different? So far I have found stronger straps as their solution. It does not need to move it very much, just enough to create enough of a gap for some of the air to get under the cover. The second reason rigid foam spa covers fly is they have a nice air space between them and the water surface they are supposed to be keeping warm. Once air starts to flood into this air space it creates pressure. The air rushing in can not push down on the water so it takes the only thing it can move, the spa cover. Once this action starts it is only a matter of what velocity is required before lift off occurs. The first movement of the flying spa cover is straight up.
The pressure in the space between the water of the spa and the bottom of the cover pops the cover straight up. It takes a lot less force than you might think because it is lifting on the entire bottom area of the rigid foam cover at once. Even a saturated rigid foam spa cover that is too heavy for one person to lift will fly when the air is pushing on the entire bottom surface. Once a heavy spa cover gets airborne watch out because anything it runs into is going to get damaged.
So are these spa cover dealers offing anything different? Are they offering a spa cover that is not designed like a wing? Are they selling a spa cover that does not require straps and truck ratchets to secure it to the spa? I propose looking for a different kind of spa cover.

Look for a design that does not use a rigid foam board resting across the top of the spa. As a medical biochemist I have been working for many years side by side with medical doctors toward the same goal – to protect and heal patients from diseases. During my professional training program I got very basic knowledge of medicine, but I never understood why highly trained medical professionals were never taught anything about self-healing and the natural healing capacity of human beings. My next question was; is modern medicine neglecting our natural mind-body connection? I hope, not. Although integrative medicine is gaining recognition by the medical establishment, the pace is much too slow. By the end of their training, many doctors feel that the compassion and spirit which drew them to medicine has been lost. Why is that?
To better understand the terms used in this article, I would like to give you a few definitions:
Modern medicine, also known as western, regular or conventional medicine, is focused mainly on the physical aspect of the body for treatment. Another name for modern medicine is allopathic medicine.
Alternative medicine, known as traditional or natural medicine, is a general term given to wide range of therapies, most of which are more than 100 years old. Alternative medicine takes a holistic approach, meaning that it does not involve only the physical body, but also considers the mind and spirit. It defines health as a state of complete balance between the mind, body, and spirit.
Integrative Medicine combines western and alternative approaches and supplements, but does not replace conventional therapy. Integrative medicine neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative medicine uncritically.
At the very beginning of the Integrative medicine era, many
physicians were faced with a huge dilemma: either they learn and incorporate alternative therapies into their practice or they ignore them. But to incorporate them was to take a risk, the risk of losing the trust and confidence of their patients who were accustomed to other therapies. Also, physicians didn’t want to violate the sacrosanct principle they were taught: “First, Do Not Harm”. They were afraid of trying something new or different because conventional science tells us that “alternative treatment can’t work because we don’t know how it works “!
The dilemma is understandable from a medical point of view.
Modern medicine wants everything to be explained scientifically and logically. That’s OK, but, on the other hand, there is a demand for alternative medicine, which people have tried and benefited from. How should one respond to huge demands for alternative methods? If alternative therapies work, and we know they do, then physicians need to consider them. Happily, they finally are doing so.
The medical profession is finally learning the ancient theory
that we cannot understand disease unless we understand the person who has the disease and accept the fact that the mind and body are bound together. Our minds and bodies are designed to stay in balance. The great majority of diseases for which patients seek medical help are in part psychosomatic, meaning that bodily symptoms are caused by mental or emotional disturbance.
Therefore, we need the help of science to deal with our health, but we also need to provide the patient with hope and faith in the treatment. Today’s MD’s should be emotionally and
scientifically competent to treat psychosomatic illness; if not
the patient will return with another problem! Do you know why?
Because no one looked into why he developed the illness in the first place!
Future generations of physicians need time to become familiar
with integrative medicine. Hopefully they will find the time to
better understand not only illness but also their patients.

between patient and doctor.

Bit by bit, modern medicine accepted the reality that western medicine can not offer all the solutions, yet it remains confident in modern science while accepting alternative treatments.
Integrative medicine use mind-body therapies such as meditation, spiritual healing, acupuncture, self-hypnosis, mindfulness, stress reduction, visualization, yoga, Tai Chi, body energy fields, reflexology, massage, guided imagery, prayer and many other alternative methods. Although we know for sure that our mind plays a positive role in the healing process, how it does so remains a mystery!
Yes, integrative medicine brought the patient’s attitude, spirit,
hope, faith, meaning and beliefs into medical offices, definitely
changing the western approach to healing. Integrative medicine is still surrounded with skepticism and controversy. In the near future, it needs to be implemented in medical schools and residencies, with more certificate courses for practicing physicians and other health professionals. The challenges are many, and the opportunities are great.
Integrative medicine is not only for the ill, but for those who
wish to increase their self-awareness, enhance their well-being, and help prevent health-related problems. In bringing meditation and other spiritual and alternative therapies into western medicine, medical professionals have changed the face of modern medicine.
Thankfully, after many years of denying alternative therapies,
modern western medicine is ready to accept mind/energy oriented therapies and other alternative treatments as powerful tools in their battle for people’s health. In this way patients and practitioners are partners in the healing process.
Today, physicians are more educated about alternative methods yet remain uncomfortable while practicing it. A new approach to medicine requires a new approach to medical education. However, this is changing because of newly introduced training programs in Integrative Medicine. The world of modern western medicine is changing every day for better, and that is good for patients.
It is my wish that alternative therapies will gradually play a
more important role in our current medical system.

Chapter 3-The World’s Simplest 4 week diet. This chapter covers a simple nutrition plan to ensure fat loss. While many people like to make losing fat complicated, the process is as simple (or as hard) the eating fewer calories than you burn on a daily basis. The diet plan suggested in the Women’s Health Big Book of Exercises is simply a higher protein, vegetable, and healthy fat program that suggests avoiding high calorie processed foods and any food high in carbohydrates (like bread, pasta, grains, and simple sugars.) Simply avoiding foods high in calories, like pasta and candy, can be enough to allow most people to eat fewer calories while eating the same volume of food. The coverage given to training muscles on use-meaning the full range of motions-rather than just appearance is a significant improvement on most weight lifting books, and reflects the current trend in functional training fitness towards “.
Within each section on the major type of muscle motion you will find certain exercises are marked as “main movements”-these are the key exercises to master for that particular body part. Each “main movement” is then broken down into 10 or more variations (ways to make each exercise harder, easier, user different equipment, etc.)
Main exercises are those that are the most effective and useful at working a specific body part and specific way. This is a very useful feature. Too often people doing exercises that just repeat each other (overworking their muscles) or less effective exercises that don’t really target the group they want to improve. This should solve that problem.
Additionally, there are also exercises highlighted the “the best exercise for x that you are NOT doing”-This is also a great feature. Sometimes the most commonly done exercises are NOT necessarily the most effective or safe. This feature instead points out less commonly used, but highly effective exercises.
At the end of each section you will also find the best stretch for each muscle listed.
At the end of every chapter you will find one or two specially designed programs that you can do just to improve that specific body part.
Chapter 11 covers Total Body Exercises. This chapter tells you how to take any major exercise and make it full-body-working arms, legs, and core all at the same time. A good example would be the squat with shoulder press. There are about 14 exercises listed in this chapter.
Chapter 12 covers warm-up exercises. This is very comprehensive and there is a section at the end of the chapter to tell you how to “create your own warm-up” by selecting exercises from specific categories.
Chapter 13 has the “best workouts for” programs. There are a lot of different programs listed. How to Get Back Into Shape, How to Lose the Last 10lbs, How to Fit into Your Skinny Jeans, How to Look Great in a Bikini, How to Look Great in Your Wedding Dress, etc etc. One of the greatest features of these programs is that each averages 12 weeks in length instead of the far more typical 30 day workout. Thirty days is simply not long enough for most people to see significant improvements. Each workout is then divided into 3 or 4 week phases. Each phase has a workout A, B, C, and sometimes which then the reader would want to alternate between each week. Essentially each workout program comes with six to 9 workouts.
Chapter 14 covers the best cardio workouts. This section is very basic as the focus of the book is primarily on weight lifting. However, one topic covered in this chapter is that of “finishing moves” which are brief, high intensity, cardio routines done with weights or body weight exercises after one’s main workout to burn additional body fat and calories. This is a topic not covered in other books and may be of interest to intermediate to advanced readers
Who this book is for:
This is a great book to keep on hand as a reference. The intended reader level is “The Big Book of Exercises” is somewhere between highly motivated beginner and intermediate level. Anyone who is getting to the point where they want to start designing their own programs, working specific muscle groups every thoroughly, looking for new exercises, and anyone asking, “Am I working x the best way possible?” etc would be very pleased with this book.
Is this book good for beginners? Yes and no. The teaching style of the book is excellent. Many readers will likely be able to learn just from reading and looking at the pictures how to correctly do an exercise. However, many beginners could be too overwhelmed by the choices inside. While the provided workouts are meant to provide simplicity, but a beginner may be better off with a book that focused on a high quality 3 month routine with each workout laid out month by month, chapter by chapter. Then, this book would function well as a reference on how to do specific exercises in your program, or modify the movement because it is too hard, or one does not have the exact equipment prescribed in one’s main workout book.
Anyone who works out at home. Many of the programs in popular fitness magazines and books are intended for gym equipment like cable/pulley systems that most people with home gyms do not have. These readers will likely appreciate the book that can quickly supply exercise an effective alternative.
